More and more people are consuming coffee and other caffeinated beverages (and foods) on a daily basis than have ever before. Recent studies report an average of 75% of US adults drinking coffee each day. But is all that caffeine consumption good or doesn’t it rather hurt the people more than anything?

More And More Caffeine

As I have just stated above, it has been found that 75% of American adults drink coffee every single day. The percentage of Americans that consume caffeinated drinks on a daily basis is certainly even higher. Of course, caffeine can not only be found in coffee (which is the most popular caffeinated beverage of course), but in a whole lot of other drinks as well.

It’s Everywhere

The list of these caffeinated beverages is getting longer and longer. The most popular drink is of course Coca Cola, but you also have a whole lot of other Cola brands, you have Energy Drinks like 3-billion-a-year-seller “Red Bull” which is the market leader among this sub-section of caffeinated drinks. Not only do you have caffeine in drinks, many people also get it with their favorite “daily sin” – a piece of chocolate. Yes, chocolate also contains caffeine. But chocolate is not really strong with caffeine, so chocolate is not a real problem here.

Consumers Get Younger And Younger

It has been reported that consumption among 18-24 year olds was at a record high in 2007. Some studies even suggest that 84% of this age group drinks caffeinated drinks on a daily basis, and they are not even the youngest. How many teenagers do you know that are already getting their “daily buzz” at Starbucks or that are gulping some cola drink down their throat every single day?

Health Risks

As you can read about in some of my other articles, caffeine brings about a whole lot of health risks, especially if consumed in higher doses. This includes your stomach releasing more acid (which leads to many other symptoms as a result), your digestion working less effectively, your blood pressure increasing and especially sleeplessness and other sleep problems that come from having too much caffeine in your blood. On top of that, caffeine is of course a drug (just like alcohol and nicotine) with the only difference it being the socially most common and wide-spread drug of all. And addiction of any kind should always be avoided.

Conclusions

Caffeine is a drug. It is society’s most common and wide-spread with more than 75% of young and normal adults consuming it every single day. Moderate consumption seems to have no serious side effects, but overconsumption certainly has as many studies show. In a society where about 25% report strong sleeping problems it is standing to reason that caffeine consumption has something to do with it. People that have problems with caffeine addiction and that know that it has negative effects on their body should do something about their problem now instead of accepting a society that suffers from caffeine side effects but does not talk about it.

I, myself, have been addicted to caffeine for a very long time, until my sleep was so bad that I did not get more than 5 to a maximum of 6 hours per night. Results in all areas of my live dropped while I kept on increasing my daily dose to keep up with the lack of energy that resulted from a lack of sleep. One day my insomnia went so bad that with all energy left I decided something had to change. Since then I have learnt how to quit caffeine and live a healthier life instead. And that is why I strongly recommend you do the same.
