Do you have a Facebook or MySpace account? How often do you see a comment stream that mentions a product or service offered on the internet? SEO companies are now using social media as an excuse to charge their clients more per month. They claim they are “using” social media as an organic method of improving your page rank and the positioning of your company. How exactly are they doing that? Ask and you probably won’t get a straight answer.

If Facebook Can’t Monitize itself, How Can Your SEO Company?

The truth of it is that no one has effectively used social media to promote a business yet. Twitter might get someone to glance at you quickly but Facebook is still a “social” network, not an e-commerce tool. Patrons don’t go there looking to shop or buy anything. They’re there to talk to friends and play Mafia Wars. If your SEO company is charging you for some kind of social media marketing you’re wasting money.

Facebook does have a search function, but people use it to find friends, not products and services. They do that on their search engine or through referrals. There are no numbers supporting the claims of SEO companies that promote social media as the e-commerce marketing tool of the future. If you want to tell your friends you have an online business, put it in your profile and post the link. Don’t buy into the SEO lie and pay someone else to do something that won’t bring you in dime one of profit.
