Green coffee bean extract is made from raw coffee beans that are not roasted. Roasting coffee beans can remove much of the chlorogenic acid, which is the active ingredient which provides amazing health benefits, including assisting with weight loss. Chlorogenic acid is a natural phytochemical that occurs in high concentrations in green coffee bean extract.
Here are some of the ways that chlorogenic acid benefits your body:
1. Eliminates free radicals – Free radicals are the result of disease, poor digestion, and toxins in our bodies. They create a host of problems including damage to our immune system, aging, cell mutation, cancer and other diseases including Alzheimer’s. Chlorogenic acid is a potent antioxidant that will fight off free radicals by absorbing them. It also reduces the number of fat cells that are being generated by your body.
2. Stabilizes glucose levels – Chlorogenic acid inhibits the enzyme glucose-6-phosphate which releases glucose into the blood stream, especially after a meal. This can help regulate glucose levels and reduce the risk of diabetes and other glycemic disorders. Proper glucose levels slow aging, reduce inflammation, detoxify your body, increase mental functions, and help with the functioning of hormone and immune systems.
3. Increases fat metabolism – Chlorogenic acid causes the liver to metabolize fat more quickly which can help you lose weight.
4. Decreases fat absorption – The fat found in food is absorbed more slowly which can aid in healthy weight loss.
5. Burns fat – Another benefit of chlorogenic acid that will help with weight reduction is its ability to encourage thermogenesis, in which the body burns fat for energy. When thermogenesis increases, extra fat in your body will be used and weight loss will follow.
Recent Study
Results of a study performed in 2011 were reported in the journal: Diabetes, Metabolic Syndrome and Obesity: Targets and Therapy in 2012. Young adults who were considered overweight were given either 1050 mg of green coffee bean extract, 700 mg, or a placebo. They were not asked to change their eating habits. After 12 weeks, the participants who took the higher dosage had lost an average of 17.5 pounds, lowering their percentage of body fat 4.4 percent. Also, the heart rate of subjects was decreased slightly after the study.
Even though the number of subjects in this study is small, the results of this study are noteworthy. The subjects were not instructed to make any major changes to their usual eating habits so the weight loss is mainly attributed to the green coffee bean extract.
