The awareness of having advanced education to improve the human resources quality is now getting higher in Indonesia. For the evidence, there are many new established universities spread from Sabang to Merauke. Nowadays, people who live in Tangerang, especially the Buddhists, are happy because of the official inauguration of Buddhi Dharma University (BDU)
At the first month of 2015 Arief R. Wismansyah as the Mayor of Tangerang inaugurated the establishment of Buddhi Dharma University. BDU is the first Buddhist University in Indonesia. BDU is located at Imam Bonjol street Number 41, Tangerang, Banten province. On the same occasion, Prof. Dr. Harimurti Kridalaksana was also inaugurated as the first Rector of BDU. The professor was born in Unggaran, Central Java province in December 23rd, 1939. He is known as an expert in literature in Indonesia. He also served as a Chairman of Indonesian Literature Department at UI (University of Indonesia) and the Coordinator of Postgraduate Program.
BDU has three faculties with fifteen departments. The faculty of Science and Technology consists of the Department of Physics, Electrical Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Informatics Engineering, Information Engineering, Software Engineering, Multimedia and Network Engineering and Informatics Management. Faculty of Business consists of the Department of Management, Accounting, Business Administration and Accounting in D3 (diploma three) program. Meanwhile, for the Faculty of Humanities and Literature consists of English Literature, Communications and English Studies in D3 program.
BDU is the third university in Tangerang after UNIS and Muhammadiyah University. Currently, Buddhi Dharma University has approximately three thousand students, with increasing numbers of students every year. So no wonder, that the existing four-story building is no longer able to accommodate the students. Buddhi Dharma University has a plan to build a building at the back of the existing building.
“Buddhi Dharma University was not achieved easily, but it was achieved with a tedious struggle”, said Udayasakhya Halim, The Chairman of the Board Administrator of Boen Tek Bio Association. Having a status as a Buddhist university, Buddhi Dharma University offers more value in education based on Buddhist values. “Buddhi Dharma University will emphasize more on the practical application of universal Buddhism. The lecturers and students are from different religions, but we all have agreed to apply it in the form of real life”, said Udayasakhya Halim.
Unfortunately, the number of Buddhist lectures is very limited. Therefore, BDU provides a postgraduate scholarship agreement for Buddhists for various majors. It is intended that the Buddhists can be lecturers at BDU. Until now, BDU has given scholarship for ten scholars who study in several universities. In addition, BDU also offers a twenty percent special discount for Pundits’ children who wish to study at BDU.
