Breed Description

The smooth-haired Manchester Terrier is considered as the oldest among the identifiable terrier dogs. They are believed to have descended from old Black and Tan Terrier, dating back at around 400 years in Britain. They usually weigh around 12-22 pounds, and stands between 15-16 inches tall.

Coat

The coat of the Manchester Terrier is glossy, dense, smooth, short, and tight-fitting. Their coat colors come in jet black, mahogany or rich tan. Their markings bears a resemblance to the Doberman, as both have mahogany or tan markings on the forelegs, chest, muzzle, chest, forelegs, underside of the tail, and inside the ears.

Activity

Requiring a great deal of exercise, the Manchester Terrier has to be taken for long walks daily. They love to run and can maintain a great speed. They are full of stamina, and would love to go alongside their owners when cycling or jogging.

Temperament

The Manchester Terrier is valued for their cleanliness, versatility, and intelligence. A small dog with a large bark, this breed makes an excellent watchdog. They thrive on companionship, most especially with children. They are naturally needs companionship, always wanting attention from their family. In return, they will be willing to give loyalty, protection, and affection. This spirited and good-natured dog makes him the ideal companion for all.

Although the look of the Manchester Terrier is similar with that of a small Doberman Pinscher, they are very different. They are known to be more well-mannered and responsive than all of the other terrier breeds.

The Manchester Terrier is easy to groom. With occasional brushing, shedding will be minimized, and loose hair will be contained. It is important to always check and clean the teeth and ears. They prefer warm climate, but must never be exposed to sun for extended periods of time as they may overheat.

Training the Manchester Terrier should start at a young age so they will learn what their rank in their pack is, and what is expected of them. Trainers should be consistent and firm in training this breed. If they are enrolled in obedience classes, it is important to ensure that they keep up with the lessons that they have learned. Constant attention is the key to having a relationship based on trust for this breed.

The Manchester Terrier will require a lot of initial training. They should be given a lot of attention especially while they are young. This is to let them know that trainers are protecting them, and they are in control. If owners will not be able to give this kind of attention, this breed might not thrive on that environment.
