His mother said she nearly suffered a heart attack when she heard the news, but the son managed to convince her that the news was not true. His fans, too, were finally able to realize that Canadian indie artist Mac Demarco was not going to be a father.
The 27 year old singer-songwriter admitted to NME.com that he is expecting to deliver, but instead of a baby it is a new album. Titled This Old Dog, the new release will be available on May 5, more than three years after his previous full length record.
In between the release of 2014’s Salad Days and the upcoming disc, Demarco did release an extended play (EP) called Another One. If the new album is close to as good as the eight songs on that EP, his fans will be thrilled when it arrives.
One thing for sure is that This Old Dog will not have any tracks about Demarco becoming a father, even though the brilliant songwriter could certainly pen a charming composition about situation if he ever has the experience. After all, plenty of artists have scored hits with songs about their offspring, including Stevie Wonder. The legendary performer reached number one on the pop charts with “Isn’t She Lovely?”, a tribute to his newborn daughter.
Even without yet being a father, Demarco could still try his hand at writing about someone else’s child. It must be a difficult subject to pull off, for few artists have ever managed to do it.
Here are the five most well-known songs that were written about the child of someone else.
Clair by Gilbert O’Sullivan
After reaching the top of the charts with “Alone Again Naturally” the British pop singer struck gold again with this ode to a friend’s young daughter, whose giggle can be heard during the ease out.
Hey Jude by The Beatles
Paul McCartney wrote this huge hit in an effort to provide solace for John Lennon’s son Julian, who was going through a rough time in his youth.
His House Her Home by Squeeze
Sweets From a Stranger gave the British new wave band its second biggest hit, “Black Coffee In Bed,” as well as this song inspired by a girlfriend’s young son. The usually deep-voiced Chris Difford sounds impressively like John Lennon on the track.
Little James by Oasis
Most of the group’s lyrics were penned by Noel Gallagher, but brother Liam wrote this track from Standing On The Shoulder Of Giants. It was addressed to the song of a girlfriend.
Billie Jean by Michael Jackson
Although the title character claims otherwise, her son was not fathered by the guy singing this song from Thriller that hit number one in the early eighties.
