When it comes to green tea extract pills, there are good ones and bad ones. In order to spot the differences, you need to read the labels. The worst ones are the weight loss aids.
They are promoted as fat-burners, but like all of the rest of them, there is no good evidence to support the effectiveness of these supplements. Most of them contain too much caffeine, which, because it is a stimulant, can cause a variety of health problems and complaints.
Drinking green tea is considered to be better for your health than drinking coffee, for two reasons. First, it has less than half of the caffeine found in an equivalent cup of coffee. Second, it has antioxidants, which coffee does not.
If green tea extract pills help your body burn fat, the mechanism of action is unknown. The whole idea of fat-burners and "Thermogenesis" is theoretical.
One idea that is promoted by some body builders is to submerge your body into a tub of icy water, for as long as you can stand it. That's expected to cause the cells of your body to produce more heat, which equals energy, which equals calories burned. It is not an activity that I would recommend, because it also decrees the function of your immune system, making you more susceptible to colds.
If you need to lose weight, you need to burn more calories than you take in. You do that by eating less and moving more. Some extracts like green tea, ginkgo biloba and resveratrol, as well as some nutrients like ATP and chromium may help, but calorie restriction is the most effective weight loss method that exists.
The best green tea extract pills are not the single ingredient supplements or those that have added caffeine. Whether weight loss or the prevention of heart disease and cancer are your goals, you will see the most benefit from a totally balanced supplement.
Some natural health advocates promote whole food supplements, but there is no single combination of foods that provides your body with everything that it needs to counter the effects that time has on your body. Beside that, things like gingko biloba and green tea are not "foods".
As for resveratrol, the content that is present in foods like grapes and peanuts is very low. The antioxidant has been shown in various studies to increase the number of calories burned during exercise, improve insulin sensitivity and act against cancer in all of the different stages of the disease.
It advances cancer-cell formation, growth and progress.
But, these studies were conducted using concentrated doses of trans-resveratrol. You can not get that kind of concentration in a food or a whole food supplement.
Green tea extract pills may provide some protection against certain types of cancer.
Claims relating to the prevention of breast and prostate cancers are considered valid, as long as they are not misleading.
But, in my opinion single-ingredient green tea extract pills are not the best value for your money.
Remember, when it comes to your health, look for a supplement that not only includes green tea extract, but also contains vitamins, minerals and herbal extracts that work in synergy with one another to gain the most impact on your health.
