It often occurs that gamers need to capture and record their game play on XBOX360. Unfortunately, the XBOX 360 does not natively have the support for video recording, so an external device needs to be used. After testing several different methods of external capture, we settled on using an external VGA video capture card – the Epiphan Systems VGA2USB LR.

In order to properly capture and record video from XBOX and XBOX 360 game play, you will require the following:

XBOX 360 VGA HD cable
All XBOX and XBOX360 video game consoles feature an output which can function with VGA monitors. The XBOX 360 VGA HD AV cable plugs into the output port at the back of your game console and provides a VGA output for you to use.

Epiphan Systems VGA2USB LR video capture device
The VGA2USB LR is required as it serves as the bridge and converter between your XBOX and the computer which you are recording to. IT basically grabs the video from the VGA port and converts it into a format which your computer can then save to video, such as MPG or AVI.

XBOX capture – the Process

1. Connect XBOX 360 HD AV cable to game console.
You should now have a fully functional VGA output port that you can use to interface with the VGA2USB LR video capture device.
2. Connect VGA2USB LR to VGA output from XBOX.
3. Connect VGA2USB LR to USB port on computer that you would like to record the video to.
4. Launch the VGA2USB program provided for free by Epiphan Systems. Select "record video."

It's that simple. You are now ready to record video from the XBOX 360 at full resolution and frame rate.

Why the VGA2USB LR outperforms TV capture cards in XBOX capture
The VGA2USB LR is a superior product to any TV capture card that is used for traditional video capture and recording for a multitude of reasons. Firstly, the VGA to USB LR is able to record at native VGA resolutions, meaning that you are able to record a full HD image, whereas TV capture cards ruin the quality of the image coming from the game console. Secondly, the VGA to USB LR is able to record at extremely high frame rates, often up to 60 frames per second, meaning that the resulting video will be identical to what you see on your TV.

XBOX Capture – Audio Recording
Of course, you would also want to record audio with the video of your XBOX game play. For that, you may simply connect the audio-out on the XBOX to the line-in on the computer performing the recording. Then, using a video capture software (Adobe Premiere is a good one) indicate "line-in" of your sound card as the audio capture device and "Epiphan Systmes VGA to USB LR as the video capture device." That's it! As the VGA2USB LR appears as a high-resolution webcam in Windows, virtually any software that supports external USB cameras is able to capture and record video from your XBOX or XBOX 360.
